A Brief Guide to Our Church

We’re so glad to have you with us!

The congregation of Scottsville Presbyterian extends you a warm and cordial welcome.

We are most honored when you choose to worship with us.

Your presence adds to the joy of our worshipping God together.

However you come and whatever your religious background, we hope you will find nourishment in your spiritual journey while you are with us. In this short guide, we offer you information that may help you feel more at ease.

Our Mission

For 180 years, the purpose of our church has been:

• to worship God,

• to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, and

• to provide a community of fellowship and service

to people living in the vicinity of Scottsville, Virginia.

We are more than a building. We are a community of people who share a common faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  We commit our lives to living in fellowship and service under Christ’s rule.

Worship at Scottsville Presbyterian

The worship of God is central to our life as a church.  We gather every Sunday for worship at 11:00 a.m. We invite you to be our guest in worshipping God.

We celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) on the first Sunday of the month. If you are a baptized Christian, we welcome you to receive communion with this community of God’s people.

For details on our way of worshipping God, please visit our Worship page.

Programs of the Church

In addition to our Sunday worship, we offer the following weekly/monthly programs:

Adult church school:  An adult class meets on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. to study the Bible. The class meets in the church office across the street at No. 410B. Pastor Lindsey teaches the class and encourages lively discussion.

• Presbyterian Women and Presbyterian Men’s Groups: Groups composed of Presbyterian Women and Presbyterian Men meet monthly on the third Sunday of each month at 9:30 a.m. (On that Sunday, they replace the adult church school class.) The Women meet in the church office across the street; the men at Donna’s Café around the corner on Valley Street.

Centering Prayer Group: An ecumenical group gathers every Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the church office for a period of Centering Prayer. This prayer of silence builds upon Christianity’s long tradition of contemplative prayer. The prayer session is followed by a time of shared discussion.

Outreach to the Community

Our church participates during the year in a number of outreach programs to the community, as the need arises. They include:

delivering meals through Meals on Wheels,

helping construct a Habitat for Humanity house,

collecting and distributing food through Bread of Life, and

supporting the Hospice of the Piedmont in their ministry to the dying.

We have established many ties with the Discovery School for Boys in Buckingham County. Boys from the school often worship with us.

Our Pastor

Our pastor since the spring of 2007 has been the Rev. Gordon Lindsey. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School. He comes to the ordained ministry after a 25-year career in corporate business, primarily with the J.C. Penney Company. You can contact Pastor Lindsey using his e-mail: ggrlindsey@earthlink.net.
