at Scottsville
Presbyterian Church
Currently Scottsville Presbyterian Church offers two adult educational opportunities.
Scottsville’s Presbyterian Women’s and Men’s Groups meet on the third Sunday of each month at 9:30 a.m. The Women’s Group meets in the church office. The Men’s Group meets in Donna’s Café, just around the corner from the church on Valley Street.
The Women’s Group follows a curriculum for Bible study provided by the Presbyterian Chruch (USA). The Men’s Group discusses current national, political, and social issues, seeking for a Christian perspective on them.
The Centering Prayer Group of Scottsville meets in the church’s office on Thursday evenings. The group meets for prayer at 6:30 p.m. A lively discussion of theology and spirituality follows at 7:00 p.m. Topics of discussion vary from week to week.
Centering Prayer is a modern adaptation of the ancient Christian discipline of contemplative prayer. In centering prayer, one does not come to God in prayer to talk with God, but to be with God in silence. For many practitioners, being with God in silence proves a transformative experience. One learns to rest with God rather than be busy with God.
Following 20 minutes of centering prayer, the group then either watches videos dealing with aspects of Christian spirituality or discusses different topics of Christian theology and spirituality. The group is fully ecumenical drawing participants from different churches in Scottsville.
Our Sunday morning adult church school class is not meeting during the months of June, July, and August. We will resume our classes on Sunday, September 7. Please check the website in August for a description of the course of study we will follow in the fall of 2008.
